South Norwood High Street Stories

What's South Norwood High Street Stories?

What's South Norwood High Street Stories?

South Norwood High Street Stories is a collection of stories and memories of the local area told by residents. South Norwood has seen many changes since its Victorian hey day and the pace of change has increased rapidly through the latter part of the 20th and the start of the 21st centuries. This is a project to capture personal recollections and experiences, the details that will bring the high streets to life for future generations.

Recordings took place in March 2023 in different locations around South Norwood. We visited local care home Acacia Cares and Communitea, a café on High Street which is a focal point of community life. Our last session was with Croydon United Domino Club at their long-time home, Socco Cheta Community Hub. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories with us over a cup of tea or a game of dominos, your colourful stories inspire and celebrate this vibrant area.

South Norwood High Street Stories is funded by Historic England’s High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme delivered by Croydon Council. For more information visit www.croydon.gov.uk/southnorwood.
