Event Series Event Series: Norwood Narratives

Norwood Narratives

Norwood Narratives is an exhibition exploring life on our local high street through the stories told by our community.

“Remember the cinema? I took my first girlfriend there. I took an Irish girl, 1969 I took her there. They used to do Saturday morning pictures, Laurel and Hardy.” The Odeon Cinema, Station Road, now Aldi Supermarket.

Created by Croydon Council as part of the South Norwood High Streets Heritage Action Zone programme, this exhibition features oral histories, student artworks, and cherished memories, all from the local community, which paint a vivid picture of our high street’s past and present.

The exhibition features projects from the Historic England funded community engagement programme.

South Norwood High Streets Stories is a collection of oral histories recorded by local volunteers. Harris Academy students bring their unique perspectives of the high streets to life in South Norwood in Print. High Street Archive is a project by longtime resident Judith Burden to retrace South Norwood’s shop histories back to the 1950s. The archive features stories gathered by Croydon Council during ‘reminiscence sessions’,   offering a window into our collective past.

Complete your journey with copies of the South Norwood Heritage Walk and the Mod Map, two self-guided adventures uncovering the beauty of our built environment, and the stories behind them, from the Victorian era to the 20th century.

We will also be screening Tracing the Past of South Norwood which explores the origins, people and places that have shaped the area and the our South Norwood High Street Stories film, offering visuals for our first collection of oral histories recorded in March 2023. Both films will be shown at designated times throughout the exhibition. See below for details.
