We Declare a Climate & Nature Emergency

We declare that the Earth’s life-supporting systems are
in collapse, threatening biodiversity and human societies everywhere.

Protecting the environment is vital for the continued health of our planet and people. Stanley Arts recognises its responsibility to protect the environment and support our communities in the face of the climate and nature emergency; by reducing our own environmental impact and by sharing our organisation’s journey with audiences, stakeholders and external partners. We will ensure there are opportunities for everyone to engage with climate action at
Stanley Arts.

We will use our platform as a multi-disciplinary arts centre to raise awareness and promote discussion on the climate and nature crisis through our work and our community; and support the artists we collaborate with to make work highlighting environmental issues, and to make work in responsible ways.

"We will use our platform as a multi-disciplinary arts centre to raise awareness and promote discussion on the climate and nature crisis through our work and our community."

Our Action Plan focuses on 4 key areas:

  • Our building
  • Our staff, governance and office operations
  • Our partners and networks
  • Our work and programme

We commit to train all our staff in carbon literacy, with environmental responsibility a part of all jobs and a means of assessing success. We use the Theatre Green Books and Julie’s Bicycle Creative Climate Tools to continually improve our carbon footprint for our operations, performances and events.

We will use our profile as a prominent cultural and civic building in Croydon and wider South London to promote dialogue and engagement from across the community on this most important
of issues.

We will play a leading role in a local Culture Declares Emergency Hub, encouraging other organisations to join us with their own Declarations and Action Plans.

Our Targets

Putting ‘Green Credentials’ at the heart of all building refurbishment and
improvement planning.

A group on the board of
trustees to assess and advise on environmental issues across all areas of the business.

Leading on the set-up of a local hub to address the climate crisis and creating opportunities for us to meet and discuss.

Humanising climate issues through our creative work, reducing barriers to involvement and engaging the broadest range of voices.
