5 things to know about Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s ‘Dream Lovers’

Discovering Samuel Coleridge-Taylor and his work Dream Lovers

If you haven’t heard of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, you’re in for a treat! As a pioneering Black British musician, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor made waves in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for his contribution to classical and choral music with his beautiful, evocative compositions.

Here are 5 key things to know about his life, deep connections to Croydon, and his lesser known piece Dream Lovers, ahead of the performance at Stanley on 14 & 15 February.

Born and Raised in Croydon
Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London, in 1875, but he spent most of his life in Croydon. Raised by his English mother and grandfather, he lived in the area from a young age and developed his musical talents there. His upbringing in Croydon provided the foundation for his early education and creative inspirations. Today, his legacy is still celebrated locally, with landmarks such as the Coleridge-Taylor Centre and a blue plaque marking his former home.

A Romantic Journey in Music
Dream Lovers is a romantic and enchanting composition that showcases Coleridge-Taylor’s gift for melody and emotional depth. Written for voice and piano, it’s a short but powerful piece that transports listeners into a world of longing and affection. The music flows gracefully, creating an intimate atmosphere perfect for a romantic evening.

Inspiration from Poetry
Coleridge-Taylor drew inspiration from the poetry of Christina Rossetti, a fellow Victorian artist known for her dreamy and evocative verses. The lyrics paint a picture of lovers meeting in dreams—a romantic concept that Coleridge-Taylor brings to life with sweeping, lyrical lines and a gentle, flowing accompaniment.

A Hidden Gem
This is the first professional revival of this work since its premiere in 1898! Co-producer Laura Migliorino, an Italian-American photographer, uncovered one of the few remaining scores of Dream Lovers in the archives of The British Library during research for the US-UK Fulbright Commission in 2022. Her photos of the score will be featured in the projections for the performances.

Dream Lovers is a hidden gem that offers a glimpse into the softer, more intimate side of Coleridge-Taylor’s music. Whether you’re a fan of classical music or just love discovering new romantic tunes, Dream Lovers is a must-listen.
